Afellay has been on Liverpool's radar for some time and was linked with a
move to Anfield throughout 2011 prior to suffering a serious knee
injury last September.
Reports just prior to the sacking of Kenny Dalglish last month suggested
the Reds were still showing interest in the Netherlands international,
who is seen as a possible replacement for Dirk Kuyt, who recently left
the club.
But according to Catalan television station TV3, Lille have made the first move in the race to sign the 26-year-old.
The Ligue 1 club have money to spend following the recent sale of Eden Hazard to Chelsea.
Afellay has seen several players move ahead of him in the pecking order
at Camp Nou as a result of his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
In addition to Alexis Sanchez, the likes of youngsters Cristian Tello
and Isaac Cuenca impressed last season, and it is thought the Dutchman
will be allowed to leave the club if the price is right.
Inter Milan and Juventus are also keen.
